Installation & Setup
Get Formify up and running in your Jira instance in just a few minutes. This guide covers installation from the Atlassian Marketplace, initial setup, and how to access the configuration panel.
Prerequisites
Before installing Formify, ensure you have the necessary permissions and environment.
Required Permissions
To install and configure Formify, you need:
For installation:
- The Administer Jira global permission (to install apps from the Marketplace)
For configuration:
- Team-managed projects: the Administer spaces permission in the project where you want to create rules
- Company-managed projects: the Administer spaces permission and the Administer Jira global permission, because Formify reads the project's screen and workflow configuration to list its fields
Note: Regular users don't need any special permissions to see rules in action. Rules execute automatically for all users who can view or create issues. Only administrators need permissions to create and manage rules.
Supported Jira Versions
Formify works with:
- Jira Cloud (all current versions)
- Both company-managed and team-managed projects
Formify is a Jira Cloud app and does not support Jira Server or Data Center.
Installing from Atlassian Marketplace
Installing Formify is quick and straightforward.
Step 1: Visit the Marketplace Page
Go to the Formify listing on the Atlassian Marketplace:
Alternatively, you can find the app by searching for "Formify" in the Atlassian Marketplace.
Step 2: Install the App
- Click the Try it free button on the marketplace page
- Select your Jira site from the dropdown (or log in if needed)
- Click Start free trial to begin installation
- Wait for the installation to complete (usually takes less than a minute)
Formify offers a free trial period. You can test all features before committing to a purchase.
Initial Setup
After installation, Formify is ready to use. There's no additional configuration required at the instance level.
Verify Installation
To confirm Formify is installed correctly:
- Navigate to any project in your Jira instance
- Next to the project's name in the sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Space settings
- Find the Apps section in the settings menu
- You should see Dynamic Screen Rules listed: that is Formify's name in Jira's menus
If you see it under Apps in Space settings, installation was successful.
Accessing the Configuration Panel
Formify is configured per project. Here's how to access the configuration panel.
Step 1: Open Space settings
- Open the project where you want to create rules
- Next to the project's name in the sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Space settings (you need the Administer spaces permission)
Step 2: Open Formify
- In Space settings, find the Apps section
- Select Dynamic Screen Rules: that is Formify's name in Jira's menus
- Formify opens on the list of the project's fields, with a tab for each screen. Select a field to see and add its rules
Can't see the Apps section? You may not have the Administer spaces permission. Contact your Jira administrator to request access.
What You'll See
Formify opens on the project's field list:
- Screen tabs - Create Issue, Issue View and Transition in company-managed projects (service projects also show a JSM Portal tab, but rules for the customer portal can't be created yet, and rules on the other tabs don't run in Jira Service Management projects). Team-managed Jira Software projects show Create Issue and Issue View; other team-managed projects show Create Issue only
- Field list - Each field with its type, screens, work types and number of rules
- A field's page - Its rules, one tab per kind of rule, each with an Add Rule button
- Rule actions - In each rule's ⋯ menu: edit, disable or enable, reorder, delete
Understanding Project-Specific Configuration
Formify is configured per project, not globally across your Jira instance.
What this means:
- Each project has its own set of rules
- Rules configured in Project A don't affect Project B
- You can experiment with rules in one project without risk to others
- Different teams can have different field behavior tailored to their needs
Why it's designed this way:
- Projects often have different workflows, issue types, and requirements
- Project isolation prevents unintended side effects
- Teams get exactly the field behavior they need
Best practice: Start by configuring rules in a test project or a single production project. Once you're comfortable with how rules work, roll them out to other projects as needed.

Troubleshooting Installation
"I don't see the Apps section in Space settings"
Possible causes:
- You don't have the Administer spaces permission
- The app installation didn't complete successfully
Solution:
- Verify you have the Administer spaces permission in the project (ask your Jira admin if unsure)
- Go to Jira Settings → Apps → Manage apps and verify Formify is installed and enabled
- Try accessing a different project to see if the issue is project-specific
"The app installed but I can't create rules"
Possible causes:
- Browser cache issue
- Missing permissions
Solution:
- Refresh your browser or clear cache
- Verify you have the Administer spaces permission in the project, and in a company-managed project also the Administer Jira global permission: without it, Formify can't list the project's fields
- Log out and log back in to Jira
- If the issue persists, contact support (see Getting Help)
"Installation failed"
Possible causes:
- Network connectivity issue
- Marketplace service temporarily unavailable
- Insufficient Jira permissions
Solution:
- Verify you have the Administer Jira global permission
- Try again in a few minutes
- Check Atlassian Status (status.atlassian.com) for Marketplace availability
- Contact Atlassian support if the issue persists
